Tesco was founded in 1924 by Jack Cohen, who made £1 on his first day's trading. The first store was in Edgware. The name Tesco contains the initials of the owner of a firm supplying the firm with tea, T E Stockwell, and part of Jack's surname Cohen. Tesco has 1,982 stores in Britain. It operates a total of 2,291 stores around the world and employs 296,000 people, with branches in Ireland, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia. Tesco has a 12.8 per cent market share of all retail in Britain. It is the leading supermarket for sales in toiletries, CDs and baby care. It has a 24 per cent share of the UK retail food market.
